SAVAGE RIVER, Aug. 6, 2011 – A 10K race equates to 6.2 miles.
On Saturday, however, at the annual Moonshine Classic footrace at Big Run State Park, Jeremy Rice needed only four miles. That is, the last four miles.

Rice, 29, of Frostburg, trailed both Woody Snoberger and Nathan Whitacre by about eight seconds at the two-mile mark of the double out-and-back road course in southeastern Garrett County. As Snoberger’s loping stride toiled in the insufferable humidity, Rice’s biomechanically efficient form found a groove – at helped him earn first place at the finish line.

Rice led all 86 runners with a time of 36 minutes and 27 seconds. Snoberger, 26, of Ridgeley, W.Va., was second in 37:22 while Whitacre, the 19-year-old Hampshire High School graduate of Bloomery, W.Va., took third in 38:03.
Trae Miller, a leading runner for the Frankfort High School cross country team, placed fourth overall. The 16-year-old Fort Ashby, W.Va., resident finished in 38:43. Andrew Clark, 18, of Mountain Lake Park, rounded out the top five with a time of 39:11.

Tom Ruckert, who turned 59 on Wednesday, placed seventh overall and earned the men’s masters crown with a clocking of 40:14. Jane Rossi, of Frostburg, won the women’s masters title with a time of 51:17.

But no one on this day could prevent McHenry resident Jen Sober from leading the women – and most of the men. The 38-year-old personal fitness specialist placed 13th overall in 41:35. Julie Gessler, 18, of Ellicott City, did her best to pace with Sober. That lasted a bit more than two miles before Sober, who in a month’s time heads to Beijing, China to compete in the 2011 Short Course (Olympic) Triathlon World Championships, pulled ahead for good.

Gessler finished 43 seconds behind Sober in 42:18. Elizabeth Patron, 22, of Cockeysville, was third in 45:30 while Mountain Ridge High School graduate Emily Foreman, 18, of Frostburg, was fourth in 46:42. Becky Gessler, 16, also of Ellicott City, finished out the top five in 47:14.
