CAPON BRIDGE, W.Va., Sept. 1, 2011 -- Romney Middle School sixth-grader Hannah Lipps posted the fastest time of the day Thursday afternoon in a three-team meet on a hilly two-mile cross country course at Capon Bridge Middle School.

Josh Medina of Capon Bridge won the boys' race in 14 minutes and one second to lead the boys team to victory with 25 points. Romney was second with 35 points while Harper's Ferry was third with 81 points.

Lipps posted a time of 13 minute and 59 seconds - far slower than her 11:23.3 clocking the previous weekend at the Autumn Classic Invitational in St Mary's,WVa. There, she led a field of 116 runners and broke up the winning team's pursuit of a perfect score. She finished some 42 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

On Thursday, the competition wasn't even that close even though Lipps seemingly took it easy in the first half of the race. At the start, Lipps - whose older brother and sister, Elijah and Rachel, pace the Hampshire High School cross country teams - laid back in fourth place as the runners left the path parallel to the new football field and headed past the playground area.

On the way back - still in the first mile - Lipps ran side-by-side with a Capon Bridge opponent. On her heels was the No. 2 runner for Romney. But Lipps manhandled the field as it started the ascent up a monster hill around the midway point. By the time Lipps left the wood-lined trail to repeat the first part of the course, there was more than a minute between herself and the second-place runner from Capon Bridge.

Capon Bridge won the team title with 20 points. RMS was second with 40 points and Harper's Ferry did not field a complete team. Complete results were not immediately available.

Capon Bridge and Romney middle schools meet for the third time this season on Tuesday, Sept. 6, again in Capon Bridge. The first race is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
