Rice, Schemel ‘connect’ with Strawberry Fest 5-miler

MERCERSBURG, Pa., June 4 – Up-and-coming distance standout Caroline Schemel continued to impress on Saturday by being the first female to cross the finish line of the inaugural MPMC Strawberry Fest 5-mile run/walk in Mercerseburg.

Schemel, 14, covered the single-loop course on paved roadways through Franklin County’s scenic farm country in 35 minutes and 0.8 seconds – good for third overall among 35 official finishers who stopped the clock at Mercersburg Lions Club Community Park.

Nikki Snider, 35, of Hedgesville, W.Va., was second in the women’s standings with a time of 39:52 and Erin Hoffman, 14, of St. Thomas, was third in 40:19.6. Mercersburg’s own Denise Edwards, 50, won the women’s masters division in 43:07.6.

Will Rice, 17, of Mercersburg, won the overall title in 33:30.4 – more than 50 seconds ahead of runner-up Luke Cessna, 44, of Fort Loudon. Cessna posted a time of 34:24.9 and earned the men’s masters title for his effort. Rick Burkett, 46, of Greencastle, placed third in the men’s field in 35:39.8.

Race director Danielle Fox said while Rice and Schemel made it look easy, others commented that the two hills, strategically placed in miles one and four, were challenging obstacles. The post-race comments from runners and spectators, along with custom-ordered cool weather for early June, made for a great start to what Fox hopes becomes a tradition.

The event was staged by Montgomery, Peters, Mercersburg Connectivity (MPMC) and its members, who comprise a subcommittee of the Mercersburg Area Council for Wellness (MACWell). Together, the groups envision a network of communities in which residents of all ages and run, walk or bicycle to work, school or for recreation – safely.

Right now, that vision is a dream that, next month, is taking one step closer to reality. MPMC contracted architectural firm Cambell Thomas & Co., of Philadelphia, to begin a one-year feasibility study on the best way to connect Franklin County neighborhoods. The $30,000 study is only one step of the process. A second, important step already has been achieved. After MPMC’s participation in last year’s South Mountain Region Trail Summit, Franklin County officials included the MPMP project as an element to its greenway plan.
