LAVALE – Daniel Barbe said he was “tired out” after completing the inaugural New Year’s Day Resolution Run on Thursday in LaVale.

Presumably, he was also more than a little cold. Barbe, 6, of Springfield, W.Va., joined 35 others in celebrating the turn of the calendar to the year 2009 by completing the low-key 2.62-kilometer run at Country Club Mall despite temperatures being in the mid-20s.

He placed 20th overall in 18 minutes and 48 seconds, good for a pace of 11:33 per mile over the 1.63-mile loop course. The route, which included two tough hills, was partly covered by snow from the previous night’s winter storm.

Josh Minton, 15, of James Island, S.C., held off 51-year-old Mike Meadows to win in 9:34. Meadows, of Martinsburg, W.Va., was second in 9:40 and Taylor Mason, 17, also of James Island, was third in 10:45. Meadows took home the men’s masters title.

Connie Milligan, 40, of Cumberland, placed ninth overall and won the women’s title in 13:04, an 8:02 pace. Mary Moran, 54, of Frostburg, was second in 14:51 and won the women’s masters title.

Cody Milligan, 13, of Cumberland, won the kids’ fun run in 2:23 on a course a bit shorter than the advertised half-mile. Atticus Speis, 12, of Cumberland, was second in 2:40 and sister Darrah Speis, 10, led all females to the finish line in 2:43.

The newest regional community event in Allegany County drew runners from

four states – Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and South Carolina – as well as two countries – the United States and England.

“Things went fairly well today,” said Kevin Spradlin, marathon club executive director. “The turnout was great considering club and mall officials put this race together in about four weeks. Our volunteers from all the organizations were outstanding. There were a couple of issues that can easily be rectified for next year’s event which, we hope, can incorporate a midnight start time on New Year’s Eve instead of today’s 10 a.m. start.”

The events were sponsored by the Mountain Maryland Marathon Club. Race-day photos and video were taken by volunteer Darrell Cavey of TriStateRunnur.com and timing was provided by Nut Hall of Western Maryland Timing.

Country Club Mall marketing and security officials helped coordinate and execute the event, as well as representatives of the Allegany County Fire Police and key volunteers from the Mountain Maryland Marathon Club.

Complete results can be viewed at www.mountainMDmarathon.org, www.wmtiming.com and www.TriStateRunnur.com. The marathon club’s next race is Saturday, Feb. 14 in Londonderry Township, Pa., just 2.5 miles north of Ellerslie.
