Oates second to Mower in Volvo Powertrain 5K

HAGERSTOWN – Doug Oates said a week ago at a race in Chambersburg, Pa., that he was working his way back into shape. Most would agree he’s attained that general level of fitness.

The 30-year-old Hagerstown resident finished second on Saturday in the Volvo Powertrain 5K (3.1-mile) road race in Hagerstown. Oates crossed the finish line in 16 minutes and 37 seconds. Bret Mower, 37, of Greencastle, Pa., was first in 16:27.

Oates’s time was nearly a full minute faster than the Race for the Nation 5K run on Aug. 30 on a fairly flat course. Whatever the terrain was on Saturday, it was clearly to Oates’s liking as he averaged 5:21 per mile – 15 seconds per mile faster than only a week ago.

Rob Hovermale, 44, of Smithsburg, was third overall in 17:15 while Mike Meadows, 51, of Martinsburg, W.Va., was fourth (18:07) and Ronnie Knepper, 57, of Waynesboro, Pa., was fifth in 18:26.

Chambersburg resident Shayna Weir, 22, led all females in the 55-runner field (including 24 women). Weir, who clocked a 20:54.7 in Chambersburg where she was the second woman overall on Aug. 30, finished in 21:13 on Saturday.

Despite a slower time, Weir ran well ahead to outdistance runner-up Hagerstown’s Kay Harrison, 45, who stopped the clock in 21:59. Katie Thompson, 27, of Chambersburg, earned the bronze medal by finishing in 22:28.

Christine Moats, 40, of Hagerstown, was fourth in the women’s field in 23:19 while Jennifer Joyce, 35, of Sharpsburg, finished in 23:31 to beat out Maria Mestre, 39, of Hagerstown, by 10 seconds for fifth in the women’s standings.
