Armentrout readies for international experience

By Kevin Spradlin

CUMBERLAND – Brittany Armentrout had a lot on her mind Friday morning as she met fellow Frankfort High School graduate Allison Tappe for a 50-minute run in downtown Cumberland.

Tappe might have forgiven Armentrout if she’d simply skipped the pre-run stretching routine the two have developed over the past four years. After all, Armentrout’s thoughts were on her boyfriend, packing her suitcase and her flight out of Pittsburgh the next day. To Cleveland. Then Los Angeles. Then Brisbane and on to Sydney, Australia, for the annual Down Under Sports international games.
But just like each practice day for her entire high school cross country and track career, Armentrout limbered up before her run through the Queen City and along the Great Allegheny Passage.

It was her last run on American soil before her flight mid-Saturday morning, for which she’ll leave the Cumberland area by about 4 a.m.

While in the week-long cross country camp in the Land Down Under, Armentrout will share in a learning experience with runners from other countries. She’ll participate in 5K (3.1-mile) and 6K races. But it won’t be all running, all the time.
The highly structured camp provides downtime enough to visit the Corrumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (www.cws.org.au) and Dreamworld Theme Park (www.dreamworld.com.au). She also hopes to visit the Gold Coast and go snorkeling in Crystal Bay on the Broadwater.

And on South Strodboke Island, Armentrout and others will go venture off on a wildlife hike then go four-wheeling into the mountains, where “we’ll learn how to crack a whip, throw a boomerang or play the didgeridoo while we have a BBQ lunch.”

Armentrout, 18, plans to send regular updates for the local running community. They will be posted online at www.TriStateRunnur.com.
