OAKLAND – The 140-acre Broadford Lake Park is owned by the town of Oakland and is used both as a source of domestic water and recreational opportunities for the locals.
But on Tuesday during the Broadford Invitational cross country meet, it was the out-of-towners who ruled the day. Fort Hill’s Amanda Twigg and Preston’s Craig Pritt each earned individual victories on the modified 5,000-meter course.
Veteran Coach Steve Cosner, of host Southern Garrett, said he received positive feedback from other coaches about the changes made to the course. Those changes included omitting steep inclines – but it didn’t take away from the notorious challenging course Broadford Lake visitors have come to expect.
“Our changes I think made it a faster course,” Cosner said. “There’s a lot of hills in it, but long straight places as well.”
Twigg finished in 20 minutes and 27 seconds out outdistance runner-up Jennifer Van Der Shoot, of University, who finished in 20:56. Ari Kasprowicz, of Preston, was third in 21:04.
“I saw (Twigg) at about the 1.25-mile mark,” Cosner said. “I think Amanda has a commanding lead throughout. She was well ahead and she held it. I’d have liked to have seen Ari and Amanda race. I don’t know what it would have been like.”
Van Der Shoot, running fourth after 2 miles, passed Kasprowicz and Preston teammate Karlie Ridenour in the final 1..1 miles to finish second.
Coach Paul Martin couldn’t immediately be reached for comment about his standout senior, who won Saturday’s Mountaintop Combo in a record-setting time of 19:05.75. It’s possible that Kasprowicz used Tuesday’s event to help pace her teammates to a second-place finish in the team standings.
University won the girls’ team title with 28 points, powered by Shoot’s silver medal and sweeping places five through eight. Preston was second with 39 points, followed by Southern Garrett (84), Tucker County (116) and Fort Hill (127). Mountain Ridge was sixth with 141 points while Allegany did not field a complete team.
Like Twigg, Pritt worked his way up the lead pack over the final 5,280 feet. Cosner said Pritt was sixth at the two-mile mark and “he was back a little ways. I think hke was helping pace a (teammate) a little bit, too. At two miles, he took off.”
Pritt finished in 17:26, edging out Mountain Ridge’s Josh Shuck (17:32). Jack Butler, of University, was third in 17:40 while University’s Adam Frohnapfel (17:48) and Tucker County’s David Rhodes (17:58) rounded out the top five.
The first-year Miners from Frostburg won the boys team title with 55 points, beating out Preston (61 points). University tallied 69 points for third place, followed by Allegany (110), Fort Hill (111), Tucker County (119) and Southern Garrett (125).
“I think it was a great meet,” Cosner said. “It had to be one of the better ones” second perhaps only to the Mountaintop Combo.
“We had some of the best kids in the area” compete, said Cosner, whose Rams next compete Oct. 2 at Frankfort in the Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
