MORGANTOWN – Cross country season may not officially start until August, but some West Virginia runners have already been hitting some local summer road races to prepare.

Especially two runners in particular, who were declared all-state cross country runners in West Virginia last year.
University High School senior Jordan Brown-Stobbe and North Marion junior Emma Harrison set the top marks in Friday night’s second annual Hawk Run held at University High School.

Brown-Stobbe easily destroyed the field with his 16:38.53 5k.University High sophomore Andrew Paladino snatched a second place time of 17:20.13.

“I wasn’t really prepared for this race at all,” Brown-Stobbe said. “I just kind of took it up.”

Crossing the line without so much of a sign of heavy breathing, he showed he is on his way to reaching his current personal record of 16:11 in no time. Although he said he didn’t have the race he was hoping for on Friday, he is focusing on his ultimate goal.

“Right behind (Jacob) Burcham,” he said. “If I can stick with him and stay as long as I can, that’s what I’m going to do. Anything can happen.”

Brown-Stobbe will next hit the roads in Morgantown on July 4 for the Spirit and Breath Challenge, where he will race in the 10k.

“I’m looking for a high 33,” he said.
For Harrison this race was more of an experiment.

“I just didn’t want to get too far back in the start, try to kill it too easy on the flat,” she said. “I was just trying to go nice and steady.”

And that’s exactly how her race panned out. Starting off in about 10th place, she slowly worked her way up to a seventh place overall showing and a 21:29.23, just 13 seconds ahead of second place female and eighth place overall finisher Rachael Hulett, a senior from Preston High School. Hulett’s official time was 21:42.33.

“I’m doing a lot of workouts, a lot of hill workouts and speed because during track all we did was endurance,” Harrison said. “I am going to try to be state champion this year, so I’m just killing it.”

Those hill repeats paid off when she made it to one hill on the course.

“I just started killing it on that. I liked it. I think it’s a really good course.”

Like Brown-Stobbe, she plans on making her presence known throughout the summer. Next up for her is a 5k race in Fairview next weekend.

Rounding out the top five females were University High senior Katelyn Wheeler (22:37.60), University High senior Cici Cottrell (22:38.19), and Morgantown resident Abbey Harrison (23:02.76).

Mannington resident Alex Myers (19:10.76), Morgantown resident Tristan Harvey (20:10.57), and University High senior Daniel Nowak (21:04.24) closed out the top five.
