Hill? Yeah
Clear Spring senior gets best of both Evans at Interstate Classic

CLEAR SPRING, Md., Sept. 4 – This year’s Interstate Classic was expected to be a battle between two Evans – Hardy, of Williamsport, and Moser, of Boonsboro.

And it was – for second place.
Senior Jason Hill, of host Clear Spring, less than a year removed from being “really bored at home,” bested both and won the small school division boys race on Saturday at Clear Spring High School.

After more than three academic years of no running, Hill said he’s evolved from a beginner to “pretty serious.”

“At first, when I started, I wasn’t taking it too seriously,” Hill said. “I was just having fun. Now, I found that I like it.”

After winning – unexpectedly – on Saturday, Hill acknowledged he might have to readjust his season goals.

“I’ll try a little harder next time and get even better times,” he said.

Hard, a junior, took second in 17:04 and Moser, a senior, finished third in 17:25. Landon School junior Mac Hightower was fourth overall in 17:55 and Williamsport sophomore rounded out the top five – and the only runners under the 18-minute barrier – in 17:50.

Williamsport’s Wildcats placed three runners inside the top six – sophomore Cody Grams was sixth in 18:09 – to propel them to the team title with 47 points in a field of 10 complete teams. Southern Garrett, led by junior Jasper Tasker, finished second with 59 points.

Tasker placed seventh overall in 18:16 and was followed by teammate and fellow junior Wyat McBee in 18:18. Evan Rodeheaver, another junior placed 12th in 18:28 and the Rams finished their top five with another one-two punch in juniors Aaron Shotwell (17th, 18:41) and Mikey Skipper 18th, 18:43).

With Moser at the front, Boonsboro took third with 85 points, followed by Landon (86), Fort Hill (130), host Clear Spring (156), Smithsburg (176), St. James (209), Mountain Ridge (233) and St. Maria Goretti (283). Hancock, Mount Airy and Oakdale runners toed the starting line but the three schools did not field a complete team
Oneda: Pacesetter
Winters Mill junior dominates Interstate Classic field

CLEAR SPRING, Md., Sept. 4 – Hannah Oneda has happy feet.

While Vibram’s five-toed shoes are not new, they are relatively rarely seen in competition on the high school level in Maryland.

But since peers like winners, Oneda could be a trendsetter. She certainly set the pace, at least, on Saturday.

Oneda, a junior at Winters Mill, dominated the girls large school division race at the Interstate Classic, hosted by Clear Spring High School. Oneda posted a female-best time on the day of 18 minutes, 53 seconds – a pace of just under 6:18 per mile – to dominate the field of 87 runners.

Thomas Johnson senior Savanna Plombon was a distant second in 19:29. Only two other runners broke the 20-minute mark – Plombon’s Patriots teammates. Seniors Annie Powell was third in 19:57, followed closely by Kristen Galligan (19:58).

While trying to work through various foot-related injuries, “my feet weren’t too happy with me,” she said.

Oneda said she then made the switch to the five-toed shoes for a better fit and gave her the confidence to take a risk.

“I went out at a six-minute pace, which is kind of ridiculous,” Oneda said. “But it’s the first meet of the season, and I wanted to see how well I did at a fast pace. Not too bad for the first meet.”

Oneda finished fifth in the small school division last year with a time of 21:01. Her feet seemed to take the change of pace – and shoes – in stride on Saturday. Hitting the wooded section around Fairview Outdoor School in the second mile, Oneda went up a Western Maryland hill and “I didn’t hear anyone anymore.”

“All I wanted to do was win a race” sometime this year,” Oneda said. “The rest of the season, I’m just gonna go for top five or top three.”

But her shoes may enjoy being out front.

Despite Oneda’s win, the Falcons placed fifth among 13 complete teams with 171 points. River Hill won with 49 points, followed by Mount Hebron (72) and Thomas Johnson (84). Richard Montgomery was fourth (127). After Winters Mill, Walkersville was sixth (188), followed by Jefferson (190), Linganore (199), Washington (203), Hedgesville (209), Martinsburg (245), Tuscarora (332) and South Hagerstown (425).
Doughty edges Bruning in record-setting 3-mile race
Jefferson senior leans into course record, victory

CLEAR SPRING, Md., Sept. 4 – The race between Brandon Doughty and Braden Bruning was close – both in time and quarters.

Over the first 4,827 meters, neither runner gave an inch on Saturday in the large school division boys race at Interstate Classic, hosted by Clear Spring High School.

But something had to give. It almost was Doughty’s willpower.

With about 150 meters to go, “I was dying off,” said Doughty, a senior and returning West Virginia Class AAA cross country state champion.

The race appeared to be over shortly afterward.

“He passed me with 50 meters left,” Doughty said, “and I pretty much gave up.”

Then Doughty had a second thought. That second thought – that the finish line was in sight – propelled him to a second win and one final push forward and “I fell over the finish line.”

Said Bruning: “He just had a little more left at the end.”

Bruning, a Linganore junior and clear leader of the Lancers 2010 team, said the two runners were “back and forth the whole race” and their effort to cover the 3-mile course as efficiently as possible resulted in “a little bit of elbowing.”

Doughty acknowledged more physical contact. He said he accidentally tripped Bruning and quickly apologized. It wasn’t just the contact that helped Doughty to realize the race was going to be difficult to win. Doughty said he’s not a strong uphill runner but held a slight lead over Bruning in the second mile after the largest incline. Doughty breathed a sight of relief. Then muttered, as Bruning passed him a short time later.

“I thought, ‘this is going to be a lot tougher than I thought,’” Doughty said.

Doughty was awarded a well-earned time of 15 minutes, 45 seconds – a course record. Bruning, clearly half a step behind, was given the same official time.

The pair led 10 runners under the 17-minute mark. Jefferson junior Eric Graf was third in 16:02, followed by Stephen Keith of Walkersville (16:25) and Sam Martin of Richard Montgomery (16:34).

River Hill’s Scott Heydrick was sixth in 16:44, trailed by Jefferson sophomore Ryan Graf (16:47), Tuscaror’s Logan Jones (16:48) and a pair of Urbana seniors in Josh Allwardt (16:55) and Garet Strouse (16:59).

With five runners in the top 17, Doughty’s Cougars easily claimed the team title with 40 points. Richard Montgomery was second with 98 pionts, followed by three Frederick County teams – Walkersville (117), Linganore (122) and Urbana (125).
