CLEAR SPRING – The Interstate Classic cross country meet at Clear Spring High School was delayed by more than 50 hours due to threatening weather from Tropical Storm Hanna.

Once River Hill’s Craig Morgan got to the starting line, however, he wasted little time getting to the finish line. The senior rolled to the day’s best time of 16 minutes, 1.3 seconds in the meet, which ran a combined – and thus, competitive – large school and small school races for each gender.

Teammate Sean Kirby was second in 16:33.4, followed by Jefferson senior standout Cory Hampshire in 16:54. Preston’s Craig Pritt was fourth in 16:55.3 while Hampshire’s sophomore teammate Brandon Doughty was fifth in 17:05.9 and River Hill’s Kevin Shankar (17:11.7) was sixth.

River Hill placed four runners in the top 15 spots to claim the large school boys team title with 45 points. Jefferson was a close second with 51 points on the strength of three runners finishing in the top eight places. Thomas Johnson was third 70 points, followed by Urbana (100) and Preston (110).

In the girls race, Preston senior Ari Kasprowicz won easily, putting more than 80 seconds between her and runner-up Stephanie Bryan of Thomas Johnson. Kasprowicz averaged 6:16 per mile and finished in 18:49.5. The time would have placed her 40th in the boys large school division and ninth in the boys small school division.

Alyssa Boucher paced the Cougars on Monday with a third-place finish in 20:32.5. River Hill’s Payton Lawrence was fourth in 20:44.4 and Kristen Luttrell, of Thomas Johnson, was fifth in 20:49.3.

The Thomas Johnson Lady Patriots placed four runners in the top 15 – and five inside the top 20 – to earn the girls large school team title with 50 points. River Hill, which placed four in the top 16 – and three in the top 10 – finished second with 53 points.. Jefferson (61), Preston (96) and Urbana (130) rounded out the top five teams in the girls large school division.

Mountain Ridge rode an individual victory – and put five runners inside the top 20 – to the girls small school division team title with 47 points. Smithsburg was second with 48 points, followed by Walkersville (56) and Boonsboro (79). Clear Spring was fifth with 122 points.

Miners senior Sierra Wassel paced the field in 22:31.6 while Smithsburg’s Stephanie Breen was nearly 75 seconds behind in 23:46.3. Still, her effort broke Mountain Ridge’s quest for a sweep of the top three spots. Miner Katie Precht was third in 23:55.3. Teammate Chelsea Wininger (24:48.6) placed 10th.

Braden Grosh of Smithsburg was fourth overall in 24:10.8 and Leigh Caulfield, of Walkersville was fifth in 24:19.9 – less than five seconds ahead of fellow Lion Nikkie Roskowinski (24:24.7).

Landon School’s three runners in the top eight places paced the Bears, of Bethesda, to a first-place finish in the boys standings with 56 points. Mountain Ridge was second with 63 points, edging Walkersville’s 66 points. Smithsburg (77) and Boonsboro (109) rounded out the top five in the team standings.

Landon’s own Jack Strabo won in 16:37.6. Smithsburg junior David Wilson was second in 17:21.7 and Walkersville’s Stephen Keith (17:35) rounded out the medal winners. Chris DeRosa led the Miners to a runner-up finish by placing 10th in 18:56.6.

Early-season result doesn't match Hampshire's midseason standards

By ANDREW MASON (andrewm@herald-mail.com)

That's what Cory Hampshire said he thought before the start of Monday afternoon's 15th annual Interstate Classic cross country invitational, which was held about a month earlier than usual.

As for the course record: "I thought I would smash it," the Jefferson senior said.

His prerace confidence was as understandable as his postrace disappointment.
Hampshire - who entered as the meet's three-time defending overall boys champion and the course-record holder - finished fourth overall Monday and third in the big-school division. He covered Clear Spring's 3-mile course in 16 minutes, 54 seconds - 63 seconds slower than his record run last year.
