ROMNEY, W.Va. – After the 2nd annual Hampshire County Santa Trot 5K run on Saturday, most of the 44 participants trekked from the warmth of the expansive Hampshire Wellness and Fitness center to their vehicles to begin their journey home.

Not Karsten Brown. After placing 50th in November’s JFK 50-mile ultramarathon and then, a week later, finishing eighth in the Northern Central Trail Marathon, Brown, 34, of Front Royal, Va., won the deceptively challenging 3.1-mile run in 17 minutes and 38 seconds, besting runner-up Matthew Barnes, 30, of Fort Ashby, W.Va., by 80 seconds.

And then Brown went for a run. After all, he had a half marathon in Fredericksburg to prepare for the next day.

“I do marathons like other people do training runs,” Brown said.

Not cocky. Not arrogant. If you know Brown, you then know his was a critically honest assessment with no strings attached. The approach works.

Unsure of the course layout, Brown stuck with Barnes – the race director – in the early going. One-half mile into the road race, Brown took the lead and stayed just a few meters ahead of Barnes, relying on his closest opponent to correct him if he went astray.

Past the 1-mile point on Ridge Loop Road, Brown figured out all that was left was an out-and-back section along Sunrise Boulevard before retracing the race’s first steps to the finish line. Brown pulled away – easily – and ran to victory.

Barnes held on to finish comfortably in second place in 18:58. Holden Shockey, 15, of Slanesville, W.Va., took third in 20:07 but not without a solid final 2,500 meters. Midway through the first mile, Shockey was passed by Ellerslie, Md., resident Kevin Spradlin, who went through the 1-mile checkpoint in 6:13. Spradlin occupied third place for another quarter mile-plus then gave way to Shockey, who was never challenged for the spot the rest of the way.

Shockey stopped the clock in 20:07. Spradlin finished fourth in 20:46. Jerry Dean, 31, of Romney, rounded out the top five with a time of 21:44 – edging Winchester, Va., resident Myron Kremer, 51, by one second.

Mary Messore, 33, of Fairfax, Va., cruised to the women’s title in 24:56 – good for ninth overall. Michelle Corbin, 34, of Romney, was second in 25:51 and Trina Cox, 39, of Shanks, was third in 29:35.
