'Cats girls show fight from start to win county's 1st title

By ANDREW MASON

LANDOVER, Md. — It was clear in the very first event that the Williamsport girls were not going to settle for second at the Maryland Class 1A Indoor Track State Championships on Monday.

Kaelii Stout, Ashley Goge, Tracey Forsythe and Morgan Keplinger combined to win the 4x800-meter relay for the Wildcats in 10:13.13, storming all the way back from fifth place in the second half of the race.

"We weren't going to let anybody keep us from getting our goal," Keplinger said.

Twelve events later, Williamsport became the first school in Washington County history to win a state team title in indoor track.

Keplinger could hardly believe it. Read More

County battle ends up being for third best
By ANDREW MASON

LANDOVER, Md. — The Williamsport and Smithsburg boys indoor track teams battled each other all winter for the conference, county and region titles.

It was no surprise that they were at it again Monday at the Maryland Class 1A State Championships at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex.

In another tight finish, the Wildcats edged the Leopards 44-41 — for third place. The title went to Western Tech (69), while Glenelg (56) was second.

“You always come down here trying to win, and the kids made a run at it,” Smithsburg coach Ray Shriver said. “(The rivalry with Williamsport) always makes things interesting. You always have someone to gun for.”

“We had some big guns,” Williamsport coach John Bailey said. “But not enough.” Read More

SC's Sykes defends title, then wins another

By Patrick Stoetzer, Times Staff Writer

LANDOVER — Free and easy.

That’s how Rachel Sykes approached Monday’s Class 1A indoor track and field state meet. The South Carroll senior traveled to the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex feeling good about her chances in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

Sykes was healthy all season, the first time in a while she didn’t have to worry about painful shin splints. And she recently committed to run in college, signing with the University of Richmond.

All Sykes had left until the spring was Monday’s races. And she won them both.

Sykes took the 1,600 by pulling away from Bohemia Manor’s Jenn Cleary with a few laps remaining. She came back to take the 3,200 — and defend her state title — with a more dominating approach, building a big lead early and lapping most of the field. Sykes won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 22. 26 seconds and the 3,200 in 12:00.3. Read More

WM's Frock follows relay title with individual win

By Brian Haines, Times Staff Writer  Tuesday, February 17, 2009

LANDOVER — Chris Frock isn’t accustomed to starting a race at full speed, but on Monday afternoon the circumstances called for a different approach.

As the senior took the baton from Winters Mill teammate James Ways in the 3,200-meter relay, the Falcons were sitting in third place as Frock started the final leg. Usually he likes to ease into the race, but with time running out he started to push right away and catch up to the competitors.

With just under two laps remaining, Frock finally pushed ahead into first place and stayed there for the duration as the Falcons captured the Class 2A state title with a time of 8 minutes, 13.55 seconds at Prince George’s Learning & Sports Complex Read More

Century girls stymied; Linde runs 2nd and 4th; FSk's Butler jumps third

By Patrick Stoetzer and Brian Haines, Times Staff Writers

LANDOVER — Century’s quest for multiple championships at Monday’s Class 2A girls indoor track and field state meet was stymied in the first event of the day.

The Knights’ 3,200-meter relay team was off to a good start with sophomores Maura Linde and Rachel Larkin running the first two legs near the front of the pack. That’s when things went bad, Century coach Ryan Melhorn said.

Melhorn said Larkin was finishing her third lap of four when a meet official had junior Kirsten McGovern, the relay team’s third runner, out on the track as if to receive the baton. Larkin hesitated with the hand-off, Melhorn said, but passed it to McGovern anyway. McGovern then ran six laps before sophomore Allie Dearie finished things off.

Century, which came in with the second fastest seed time, was disqualified for running the incorrect number of laps.

It seemed to set the tone for the Knights. Linde, a strong contender to win state titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs, took second and fourth respectively. McGovern ran fifth in the 3,200. Century placed seventh in the team standings.

Melhorn said he tried to appeal the outcome — last year’s 2A boys 3,200 relay had a similar issue and was rerun at the end of the meet — but meet officials told him it wasn’t an option because only one team had violated the rules. Read More
Hard-charging Caudles send Knights to another title

By Greg Swatek
News-Post Staff

LANDOVER ----On the first day of this indoor track season, a crisp, sunny day in the middle of November, Middletown girls coach Frank Davis told his team it had a chance to be the best in the state.
The declaration was not as bold as it might seem given the Knights had won the last two Class 2A outdoor titles and last season's state indoor meet with largely the same cast of athletes.

Those athletes assembled around Davis even shared a laugh when their coach's confident words finally settled upon their ears.

Sensing he wasn't being taken seriously, Davis gave his athletes a choice. Those who wanted to continue laughing could do so elsewhere, not on his time. Those that chose to stay would begin the hard and serious work of defending a state championship.

Not one athlete chose to leave. Davis proceeded to put them through what he described as one of the toughest workouts of the season.

As he proudly declares, "I don't take any slackers."

And three months later, at Monday's Class 2A-1A state indoor meet, there was no sign of any slacking at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex as the Middletown girls proceeded to win another 2A championship. Read More

Western Tech boys reign
Wolverines take 1A title; Poly boys, River Hill girls fall short in 2A

By Jeff Seidel | Special to The Baltimore Sun

LANDOVER - The No. 8 Western Tech boys kept it simple last night.

They won the school's first state indoor track and field championship by relying on strong performances in the sprints and relays. Lance Wilkes won the 300 meters and helped the Wolverines take two relays late to pull out the Class 1A title at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.

Wilkes took the 300 (37.04 seconds) and then ran on the victorious 800 (1 minute, 33.37 seconds) and 1,600 (3:31.34) relays that helped Western Tech, which captured the outdoor championship last spring, finish with 69 points and beat Glenelg (56).

"Everyone stepped up and got the job done," Western Tech coach Shedrick Elliott said. "They were just trying to make sure they could do a little better than last year when ... we were second." Read More

For Staver, better time doesn't pay off
By WILLIAM HAUFE Sports Editor

LANDOVER She had a better time than last year, but the finish wasn't a match.

Queen Anne's County High sophomore Charlotte Staver was within a breath of defending her title Monday at the Class 2A state indoor track and field championships when Middletown's Brittney Caudle beat her to the finish line to win the girls' 800 meters at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

"I knew she was a very strong runner," Staver said of Caudle. "My coach had kind of told me to try to push the pace in the beginning so she'd have more distance to make up. But she just ... she's a very good runner. It was unfortunate, but that's how it goes I guess." After a fifth-place finish in the 500 where she never seriously challenged Staver broke away from the pack on the second lap of the 800 and was in command as she moved to a 10-meter lead. But Caudle, who almost fell over the raised metal rail that rims the track's inner circle on the opening turn, maintained a workable margin before accelerating into the final bend to begin a furious closing kick.

"Something inside me, when I hit that curve, I don't know, it was like another gear," Caudle said. "The last lap I tried to kick it."

Middletown's senior looked like she might run out of track, but had enough to nip Staver at the line, finishing in 2 minutes, 16.85 seconds, a new 2A state record.  Read More
A Needed Lift for Edelmann
Despite Misplant, Vaulter Wins Again

By Carl Little

Once a week at track meets and every day at practice, Alex Edelmann tethers his life to the edge of a pole. And although the vaulter is adept with the 14-foot-7-inch staff, it's gotten away from him on a few occasions with excruciating results.

Yesterday's Maryland 2A/1A track and field championships at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover were such a time. On his final attempt to clear 13 feet 6 inches, the Middletown senior misplanted his pole, and the result was two gashed knuckles on his left hand and chafed skin on his side and chest.

Still, Edelmann clinched his second straight indoor pole vaulting championship by clearing 13 feet.

"It's really not that dangerous," said Edelmann, bloodied. "It's just like little errors that mess you up." Read More

Central's Davis captures state title

Senior wins 300-meter dash

The indoor track season came down to just a week for Central High School senior Mark Davis.

After breaking through to capture the county championship in the 300-meter dash a month ago, Davis appeared to have reached a plateau, finishing second at the 2A West Region championships.

Central's longtime coach Ed Bowie saw something wrong in Davis' form and spent all of last week helping him tweak the problem.

"At first when I used to get tired, my arms would drop," Davis said. "Coach told me I should focus my training on my upper body and in doing that, I see the results."

Arms pumping down the stretch of the 300 state finals Monday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex, Davis became the lone state Class 2A or 1A champion from the county as he won the event with a time of 35.63 seconds.Read More

Distance runners capture two state titles each

by Darren J. Gendron | Staff Writer

The running career of South Carroll High standout Rachel Sykes has long been plagued by a hypothetical situation – what if she had a full, healthy season to compete.

On Monday in the Class 2A-1A Maryland Indoor State Championships at the Prince George's Sports Complex in Landover, she got to answer that, winning the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Sykes won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 22.26 seconds, fending off Jenn Cleary of Bohemia Manor.

"I was surprised that Jen Cleary was with me as long as she was,"

Sykes said. "That really helped me. I knew there was someone right behind me, so I was kicking down the stretch." Read More
